👶 Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Overview

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an evidence-based educational initiative developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA).
It equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and effective resuscitation to newborns at birth.

This internationally recognized program focuses on the initial management of newborns who require assistance to establish breathing and circulation immediately after delivery.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the physiology of transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life

  • Recognize newborns who require resuscitation at birth

  • Perform prompt, systematic assessment and intervention

  • Master ventilation and chest compression techniques for newborns

  • Promote teamwork and communication during neonatal emergencies

Who Should Attend

This course is essential for all healthcare professionals involved in perinatal or neonatal care, including:

  • Doctors (Obstetricians, Pediatricians, Neonatologists)

  • Nurses and midwives

  • Respiratory therapists

  • Emergency and NICU staff

  • Paramedics and first responders in maternity transport

Course Content

1. Introduction to Neonatal Resuscitation

  • Importance and goals of neonatal resuscitation

  • Overview of the NRP algorithm and flow diagram

  • Preparation of equipment and team before delivery

2. Initial Steps of Newborn Care

  • Rapid evaluation after birth

  • Thermal management (preventing hypothermia)

  • Positioning, clearing the airway, drying, and stimulation

  • Apgar scoring and assessment of heart rate and respiration

3. Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV)

  • Indications for initiating PPV

  • Equipment setup and mask technique

  • Assessing chest rise and effectiveness

  • Corrective steps (MR SOPA sequence)

4. Chest Compressions

  • Indications and timing of compressions

  • 3:1 compression-to-ventilation ratio

  • Coordinated team performance

5. Medications and Vascular Access

  • Indications for epinephrine and volume expansion

  • Umbilical venous catheter (UVC) placement

  • Medication dosages and routes of administration

6. Post-Resuscitation Care

  • Ongoing monitoring and stabilization

  • Management of hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and seizures

  • Transfer to neonatal intensive care (NICU) if required

7. Special Considerations

  • Preterm and low-birth-weight infants

  • Meconium-stained amniotic fluid

  • Multiple births

  • Ethical issues and end-of-life care in the delivery room

Teaching Methodology

  • Interactive online modules (self-study)

  • Instructor-led skill stations

  • High-fidelity simulation scenarios

  • Team-based hands-on practice

  • Real-time feedback and debriefing sessions

Assessment & Certification

  • Online theory assessment via AAP NRP Learning Platform

  • Practical skills evaluation with certified instructors

  • Successful participants receive an NRP Provider Certificate (valid for 2 years)

Why Choose NRP

  • Based on the latest AAP/AHA Guidelines for Neonatal Resuscitation

  • Combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice
